Laura Klahre

Pollination Enthusiast

Laura Klahre gives a voice to the unsung heroes – pollinators! A full-time beekeeper with over 18 years of experience, Laura raises mason bees, bumblebees, and honeybees. Laura’s store Blossom Meadow is located in Cutchogue, NY. She also writes a column “Notes from the Meadow” for Edible Magazine.

Okay, this may sound odd but in 1997 I had a dream that I was a beekeeper. That was it for me! After reading books and apprenticing for other beekeepers, I found the gusto to keep one hive. All those bees flying around me that first Spring morning – I burst into tears of happiness – my dream was coming true! Fast forward quite a few years and with pug Beasley by my side, I incorporated my business Blossom Meadow in 2009. I now have 100 hives (upwards of eight million bees) and manage additional hives for other folks.

All of our hives are on the North Fork of Eastern Long Island in the most beautiful locations one has ever seen. I am careful to select only the best locations for the bees to live, translating into quality products for the bees as well as for us. Please come visit our new store in Cutchogue located at 31855 Main Road (just east of the King Kullen Shopping Center). Blossom Meadow shares the space with the winery Coffee Pot Cellars (my fiancé Adam!).

What is TEDx?

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxFultonStreet, where x = independently organized TED event.

At our TEDxFultonStreet event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
